It’s not clear exactly what is going on behind the scenes regarding the Federal Government’s thinking about a national ID card. This article in the Age on 21 April, says that ministers and departments were taken by surprise by the Prime Minister’s public supportive comments, and that there are lots of reservations, on privacy and cost grounds. There is also scepticism about what, if any contribution a national ID card would make to national security.
ID cards are a hot topic in many countries as illustrated by these reports over the last few days from the UK, Canada and the Philippines.
