Bail skippers privacy protected, really?
This report "Bail fiasco" in today's Daily Telegraph reports that more than 4000 people in NSW skip bail each year. The Tele's request under FOI for names of those subject to outstanding warrants hasn't been responded to, and a Police spokesman says that "legal advice" prevented the release of names on privacy grounds. Its not the first time NSW Police have resorted to BOTPA. However as the Acting Privacy Commissioner points out, the NSW Police are not subject to privacy legislation in connection with their core law enforcement functions.
