Telephone data remains unproteced from business misuse

Did you know that the Integrated Public Number Database which contains the personal contact information for every Australian who has any type of telephone connection - listed or unlisted, business or personal, fixed line or mobile - is available to companies who want to ensure they have correct information on their databases? According to this report in Australian IT the Australian Communications and Media Authority is still to introduce standards to restrict business use two and a half years after it first raised concerns about misuse of the data.

The Authority had plans to have standards in place by 2004 but now is about to release another discussion paper on the issue. Maybe they will get this sorted before the Australian Law Reform Commission report on Australia's privacy laws (due in 2008)!
