National identity card: privacy worries not yet overcome
The Federal Treasurer Peter Costello last week spoke in favour of a national ID card while the Prime Minister said that he believed the debate about the card still had some way to go. An editorial in today's Sydney Morning Herald said that the "Government's task in its efforts to provide more effective surveillance of potential wrongdoers will be alay legitimate concerns about an erosion of a citizen's right to privacy"
