Big tick for pro active disclosure by UK local councils

Pro active wide dissemination of information should be seen as the norm for public sector organisations. While there need to be sensible limitations, state and local government agencies should see the web as the primary means of publication of information of interest or importance to the public and the sectors that they serve. The current publication requirements in FOI laws are limited and antiquated but there is nothing to prevent agencies going much further than the requirements of the law. Most government websites contain some useful and important information but each organisation should be incorporating pro active disclosure into their thinking about how to meet public needs for information.

This article about what local councils in the UK have achieved - including reductions in cost - is confirmation of the benefits of this approach.
